Backyard space is limited, but you want a pool. What size should it be?
The size of the pool is one of the first decisions that pool owners have to make, and it can be tricky. You want to enjoy your pool and have plenty of room to swim. But, you might also want to preserve some of your backyard space as a play area for kids, for cooking and entertaining, and other outdoor activities.
How do you find the right balance?
How to Choose the Right Size for a Backyard Pool
The starting point is your backyard. You can adjust the size of the pool you plan to install but you probably can’t expand your backyard, so this is a hard limit.
Most people choose a pool that is about 1/3 the size of the overall area of the backyard. In a 1500 square foot backyard, that would give you a pool that is 500 square feet or less. The reasoning is that a larger pool can make the backyard feel small or cramped in comparison, increases the likelihood of people falling into it, and could prevent adequate space for rescues if necessary.
The average pool is between 400 and 800 square feet, usually in a 2:1 rectangle. If a pool should be 1/3 of the total backyard area, that means the normal size of a backyard supporting a pool is between 1200 and 3200 square feet. If you have a backyard smaller than 1200 square feet, you’ll probably want to either let the pool dominate the whole backyard or choose a smaller pool.
Families, in general, need larger pools. Adults tend to lounge around the pool or cling to the sides while socializing, but for kids, a big pool is full of fun. Keep in mind that it isn’t safe to pack people shoulder to shoulder in a pool, and most pools limit the number of people allowed in at one time for safety.
For a family of 3-5 people, it is recommended that a pool be a minimum of 16 feet by 32 feet.
For a family of 6-8 people, 18 feet by 36 feet is considered the minimum.
These aren’t rules, however. These are guidelines. When choosing a size for your pool, you don’t need to follow what others do. You can decide for yourself based on what is right for your needs.
The Perfect Pool For Your Family
No matter what size or shape your backyard is, you can find a pool that will suit your needs, budget, and lifestyle. You can design around your backyard, choosing a shape, depth, and features that suit you.
For example, if you have a long and narrow backyard and you want an exercise pool, you can install a single or double-lane lap pool with plenty of depth. On the other hand, if you just want a place for the kids to play, maybe it’s better to go with a square pool that is all shallow end.
Just keep in mind that there are sometimes legal and zoning requirements. For example, you might need to leave a minimum distance between your home and the pool.
