After a long arduous winter, the temperatures will eventually warm, which means it’s time to open the pool! While it is tempting to start the process right away, you must take the right steps to safely reopen your pool or seek help from a pool company in Haverford, PA. Taking the time to complete these steps will improve the condition of your pool throughout the summer months and get you the most longevity out of your investment. Read on to learn more:
Clear Debris
Before beginning the actual process of opening up your pool itself, take some time to clean away debris that has made its way onto the pool cover and the surrounding area. Use a soft broom to remove gunk, sticks, and leaves that have gathered and if there is any standing water on the cover, use a pool cover pump to remove it before moving to the next step.
Remove the Cover
The next step in getting your pool summer-ready is to remove the cover. Before doing this, make sure that all debris is removed carefully from the top of the cover, and that you have collected anything you don’t want to be dumped right back in the pool. Be mindful of sharp edges when doing this job. Once removed, clean the cover well with either pool cover cleaner or car wash soap, and then put it up for storage in a safe location, so it’s ready to go at the end of the season. Make sure the cover is completely dry before you store it!
Fill and Skim
The next step begins when you check the water levels of your pool. In many cases, this will include adding a little water due to evaporation. Ideally, you want the water level to reach the midway point of the skimmer opening. In the meantime, while you are working on getting the water level there, manually remove debris that has fallen into your pool with a pool skimmer.
Connecting Plugs and Other Equipment, Removing Winter Plugs
If applicable, remove all winter drain plugs and re-install the typical regular drain plugs. Don’t neglect the return jets and step jets as part of this step. Also, check the skimmer baskets at this time. If you winterize, make sure you replace the skimmer baskets and ensure they are empty before removing the winterizing plugs. Then reconnect the return valve fitting.
Make sure all your deck equipment is reconnected as well, such as ladders, diving boards, and slides. Attach any necessary accessories at this time to make them functional. Now is a great time to lubricate the hinges and bolts on this equipment, keeping them in good working condition and free of rust. The next step includes reconnecting all the pool equipment, such as the heater, pump, and filter. Make sure all the drain plugs are secured and fitting properly, and make sure that any o-rings are lubricated or replaced if cracked.
Run Your Pump and Filter
Open your return side valves and check your circuit breaker to ensure that everything is in order. After this, you can turn on the pump and let the water flow through it. Be sure to wash or replace your pool filter if needed and set your valve on the waste setting.
Clean the Pool
While the pump is running, now’s the time to clean your pool properly. Scoop out large debris from the bottom of your pool, then use either a plastic net or pool vacuum to clean the bottom of your pool. Use a pool brush to clean the walls and floor of the pool, removing any algae or dirt.
Shock The Water, Run The Filter
Test your water, or better yet, have it professionally tested to ensure that it is properly balanced and ready to go for the summer. Run your filter for at least 24 hours to ensure that any shock you add is properly dissolved, and your pool is free of any remaining debris.
