As the weather starts to warm, it’s time to think about opening your pool. To ensure your pool is ready when you are, we recommend opening it a few weeks before you plan to use it. For more information about opening your in-ground or fiberglass pools in Richboro, PA, keep reading!
Prepare to Open Your Pool
The first step to opening your pool is to prepare the area around your pool. Clean up any leaves and debris in the area around your pool. This keeps these items from making their way into your pool, and makes it easier for you to complete the next steps.
Next, remove debris and water from your pool cover. If there’s water on the pool cover, you may need a wet vac or a pool cover pump to remove the water. Use a broom or a leaf blower to clear away leaves and debris.
Remove and Store Your Pool Cover
Now you are ready to get your first peek at your pool! Enlist help from a friend or family member to remove the pool cover. Once removed, lay it open and gently cleanse it with a car wash soap solution and a garden hose before allowing it to dry.
Check for any damage or tears to your cover before storing it away. Sprinkle talcum powder on the cover to help prevent mold and mildew, and store it in an area that is safe and dry.
Inspect and Clean Your Pool
Take the time to thoroughly inspect your pool and equipment, including the pump. Clean the skimmer baskets and remove any loose debris that has entered your pool. Scrub the interior with baking soda or a gentle household cleaner for a fresh start. Vacuum the pool to remove any dirt or debris that has been knocked loose and clean the filter.
Fill the Pool
Now for the exciting part! It’s time to fill your pool! Monitor the pool as it fills and check for any leaks. Once it is filled to the proper level, skim the surface to remove any remaining debris. Next, grab a brush and scrub the interior of the pool to remove any algae or dirt still hanging on.
Reattach Pump and Filter and Power On
Reattach your equipment, including your pump and filter. Be sure to remove any winter plugs and install the drain plug in its place. Before turning the pump on, check your filter and skimmer basket, and be sure everything is connected properly.
Test and Treat the Water
You’ll want to allow the pump and filter to run for at least a few hours before testing the water. You can use a digital test kit or pool test strips. Check the alkalinity, PH, available chlorine, and calcium hardness. Adjust levels as needed. Once this is complete, you can shock the pool. Keep the pump and filter running for at least 24 hours after shocking. Then, retest the water and make any needed adjustments.
