The 11-Company Interview
Recently, we met with a homeowner who had interviewed 11 different pool companies before sitting down with us. They were exhausted, confused, and frustrated. Every builder had handed them a glossy brochure, promised a beautiful backyard, and given them a price. But when the homeowner asked specific questions about construction methods—"What's your rebar spacing?" "Do you use gunite or wet-mix shotcrete?" "How do you calculate hydraulic flow?"—most of the sales reps couldn't answer.
We ended up being awarded the project. After we signed the contract, the client told me: "It would have been great to have all of this technical information in one place to help level the playing field before we started interviewing."
That conversation is exactly why this page exists.
When you look at a finished swimming pool, all you see is the water, the tile, and the plaster. You don't see the steel skeleton. You don't see the thickness of the concrete shell. You don't see the complex hydraulic plumbing buried under the dirt.
Because these critical elements are invisible, they are exactly where volume builders and budget contractors cut corners to lower their prices. They know that if the pool holds water through the warranty period, the inevitable structural failures and circulation nightmares will become your problem, not theirs.
This guide pulls back the curtain on pool construction methods. We'll explain the difference between gunite and shotcrete, the truth about steel reinforcement, and why hydraulic design matters more than pump horsepower. 1. The Concrete Shell: Gunite vs. Shotcrete (Chakri)
The terms "gunite" and "shotcrete" are often used interchangeably by salespeople, but they are entirely different application methods. Both involve pneumatically applying concrete at high velocity, but when the water is introduced changes everything about the structural integrity of your pool.
Wet-Mix Shotcrete (Often called "Chakri" or standard shotcrete)
In the wet-mix process, the concrete is fully mixed with water at a batch plant, loaded into a cement truck, driven to your house, and pumped through a hose. Air is added at the nozzle to shoot it against the steel framework.
The Problem: Wet-mix concrete begins curing the moment water is added at the plant. If the truck gets stuck in traffic, or if the crew takes too long to shoot the pool, the concrete begins to stiffen. To make it flow through the hoses again, crews will often add more water on-site. This drastically increases the water-to-cement ratio, which weakens the final compressive strength of the shell and increases the likelihood of shrinkage cracking.
Dry-Mix Gunite (The SPCP Standard)
In the dry-mix gunite process, a dry mixture of sand and cement is blown through the hose using high-pressure air. The water is injected at the nozzle by a highly skilled nozzleman exactly at the moment the material hits the wall.
The Advantage: Because the material remains dry until the exact second of application, there is no "ticking clock" on the concrete curing in a truck. The nozzleman controls the exact water-to-cement ratio, keeping it extremely low. This results in a denser, stronger, and far less permeable concrete shell. Dry-mix gunite typically achieves compressive strengths well over 4,000 PSI, which is why it is the gold standard for custom, high-end pool construction.
⚠ The "Rebound" Warning
When gunite is shot against a wall, some of the sand and gravel bounces off. This is called "rebound." Rebound has zero structural strength because it lacks cement paste. High-quality builders meticulously shovel out and discard all rebound. Volume builders will often sweep this weak rebound into the steps, benches, or floor of the pool to save money on material, creating hidden weak spots that will eventually crack or fail.
2. The Steel Skeleton: Rebar Spacing and The Bond Beam
Concrete is incredibly strong under compression, but it is weak under tension (pulling or bending forces caused by shifting soil or freezing ground). Steel rebar provides the tensile strength your pool needs to survive decades of freeze-thaw cycles in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Volume builders cut massive corners on steel because it's expensive, time-consuming to tie, and completely invisible once the concrete is shot.

3. Hydraulic Design: Why Your Pool Has "Dead Spots"
Hydraulics is the science of moving water efficiently. It is the most complex part of pool engineering, and it is the area where volume builders fail most spectacularly.
A volume builder will typically run a single 2-inch pipe around the pool and tap all the return jets into that one line. Water takes the path of least resistance, so the jets closest to the pump blast water at high pressure, while the jets at the far end of the pool barely trickle. This creates "dead spots"—areas of stagnant water where chemicals don't circulate, debris settles, and algae blooms.
To compensate for this terrible plumbing design, volume builders will sell you an oversized, high-horsepower pump to try and force water through the undersized pipes. This wastes massive amounts of electricity and burns out the equipment prematurely.
The Engineered Approach
At Scott Payne Custom Pools, we engineer the hydraulics before we dig the hole. We calculate Total Dynamic Head (TDH), friction loss, and flow rates. We use larger diameter plumbing (2.5" to 3") to reduce resistance. We use "looped" return manifolds so that every single jet in the pool delivers the exact same water pressure, eliminating dead spots entirely.
Because our plumbing is so efficient, we can run smaller, variable-speed pumps at lower RPMs. Your water stays crystal clear, your equipment lasts twice as long, and your energy bills drop significantly.
4. Plaster and Finishes: Standard vs. Upgraded
The interior finish is the waterproofing layer of your pool. Volume builders almost always quote standard white plaster (marcite) as their base price to make their bids look artificially low. Standard plaster is the weakest, most easily stained, and shortest-lived finish available, typically requiring resurfacing in 7 to 10 years.
We believe in building pools that last. That's why we strongly advocate for exposed aggregate finishes (like PebbleTec or high-grade quartz). These finishes mix actual stone pebbles or ceramic-coated quartz crystals into the cement. They are vastly more durable, highly resistant to chemical imbalances, and can easily last 15 to 25 years before needing attention.
5. The "Small" Details That Cause Big Problems
Beyond the major structural elements, volume builders cut corners on the small details that you might not notice until years later. Here are the granular differences between a budget build and a true custom pool.
Flex Pipe vs. Rigid PVC
The Shortcut: Volume builders love flexible PVC pipe because it bends around corners, saving them hours of labor and eliminating the need for precise fittings.
The SPCP Standard: We use 100% Rigid Schedule 40 PVC underground. Flex pipe is easily crushed by settling soil and is notorious for being chewed through by termites. Rigid PVC is vastly stronger, handles pressure spikes better, and ensures your plumbing won't collapse under the weight of your patio.
Equipment Pad Organization
The Shortcut: A tangled "spaghetti bowl" of pipes crammed into a tiny space, making it impossible to service the heater or clean the filter without cutting pipes.
The SPCP Standard: We build "service-friendly" equipment pads. Every pipe is perfectly plumb, spaced correctly, and labeled. We use premium Jandy/Pentair equipment, true 3-inch diverter valves, and leave ample room for future upgrades or maintenance.
On-Site Supervision Per Phase
The Shortcut: A project manager who oversees 30 pools at once might stop by your house for 10 minutes a week, leaving subcontractors to make critical decisions unsupervised.
