Make Apples-to-Apples Sense of Your Pool Bids: The Comparison Checklist

You have three written quotes. They're all over the place: $105,000, $128,000, and $89,000. Which one is the best deal?

Quick Summary

You have three written quotes. They're all over the place: $105,000, $128,000, and $89,000. Which one is the best deal?

You have three written quotes. They're all over the place: $105,000, $128,000, and $89,000. Which one is the best deal?

You can't tell yet. Because you haven't done what 95% of homeowners skip: line-by-line comparison of scope.

This guide provides the exact checklist for comparing pool quotes on equal footing, so you can actually see where money is going and make a decision based on real information instead of gut feeling.

The Problem With Direct Price Comparison

Comparing $105,000 vs. $128,000 is meaningless without context.

Maybe Quote B is $23,000 more expensive because it includes: - 4,000 more gallons of pool - A spa - A pergola - Upgraded equipment - More extensive hardscape

Or maybe Quote B is just padding margin and using the same scope as Quote A.

You won't know until you compare line-by-line.

The Master Comparison Checklist

Print this checklist and fill it out for each quote side-by-side.

Now you can see: - Where the biggest differences are - What you're actually comparing - Which quote is apples-to-apples

What You're Looking For

After you fill this out, you should notice:

If all three are within 8–10% of each other: Congratulations. You have three comparable quotes, and they're giving you market pricing. Pick the builder you trust most and proceed.

If one quote is 20%+ higher: Understand why. Is there scope the others didn't include? Is it premium equipment or more extensive site work? Is the timeline more realistic? If you can't justify the difference, maybe that builder is overpriced.

If one quote is 20%+ lower: Investigate. Is the scope genuinely less? Is equipment cheaper? Are they assuming ideal site conditions? Are they including contingency? If you can't identify what's missing, be cautious.

If all three are wildly different (30%+ variance): You might be comparing very different scope, or some builders don't understand your site. Go back to the low and high bidders and ask: "What's in my quote that's NOT in the $_____ quote?" or vice versa.

Red Flags in the Comparison

Red Flag What It Means
No patio cost specified They're hiding hardscape scope
"Equipment per builder selection" You don't know what equipment
No permitting cost breakdown Unclear who's handling permits
No contingency mentioned Every surprise costs extra
"Pricing dependent on site conditions" They're not committing to anything
Warranty is vague Don't expect support if issues arise
Timeline says "TBD" They won't commit to dates

The Question That Matters Most

After comparison, ask each builder:

"If we went with the lower-priced quote from Builder X and it didn't include feature Y, would you have included it if we asked?"

If they say "No, they're cutting corners," they might be protecting their margin. If they say "Yes, we would have included it," then it's scope difference, not quality difference.

That conversation tells you a lot.
